At the leading edge of the private jet industry there is a new, exciting and affordable alternative to the more traditional light or mid-size jets on the market–namely, very light jets or VLJs. These microjets are designed to be exceptionally fuel efficient, easy to maintain, and inexpensive. Generally speaking, most seat 4 to 6 passengers and have a maximum flight range of 1,600 nautical miles. Not all VLJs have lavatory options, be sure to check aircraft’s specifications prior to purchase if this is a selling point for you.
Some examples of VLJs that are on the market are: the Cessna Citat ion Mustang, The HondaJet, the SmartJet and the Epic Elite.
The Cessna Mustang is the most popular. Seating a modest 4 passengers, this mid-range private business jet can fly for up to 1,150 nautical miles, easily traveling up and down the eastern seaboard of the United States. Prices begin around $2.5 million dollars.
The HondaJet, another hot seller, is quickly becoming a leader in the affordable private jet industry. Packing the most power available in it’s class, the HondaJet can carry up to five passengers at a maximum 1,180 nautical miles. It also sports a discrete lavatory and a full 64 cubic feet of baggage volume.
The SmartJet is the intelligent choice in the VLJ class of aircraft. Carrying 3 passengers up to 1,250 nautical miles, this aircraft begins to approach mid-transcontinental ranges. There is no lavatory.
Finally, the Epic Elite is the longest range VLJ, traveling a maximum 1,600 nautical miles. It seats six passengers and has a very comfortable cruising altitude of 41,000 feet (most VLJs are in the 20,000 foot range.) Given it’s longer range, it is fitted with a lavatory for the comfort of passengers.
If affordability and sustainability are at the top of your priority list, VLJs are the best option to explore. They range from $800,000 to $2,500,000 in price and are quickly becoming a worthwhile investment as the private jet industry continues to expand.
